Mobile App Video Ads Need a Weekly Production Rhythm

App advertisers now launch new creative every week. Platform guidance, benchmarks, and a component method for producing enough mobile app video ads.

App advertisers now launch new creative every week. Singular's Creative Benchmark Report 2026 puts the median advertiser at 13 new creatives a week across formats, with the top quarter launching 53 or more. A team that ships one finished spot a month cannot keep up with that pace.

Most of those launches do not win. AppsFlyer's State of Creative Optimization 2026 found that the top 2 percent of creatives take roughly half of all spend or more in every vertical. The top 10 percent take more than 75 percent. For non-gaming apps, the top 2 percent of video creatives held 49.1 percent of spend in Q2 2026.

The same pressure applies to subscription, finance, shopping, health, and utility apps. Game studios face a heavier version, covered in Starti's guide to mobile game advertising.

Size the Requirement From the Platforms

Each app campaign type sets its own expectations for creative volume and refresh:

  • Meta Advantage+ app campaigns: up to 50 images or videos per upload, with no limit on the total. Meta's creative recommendations suggest using the maximum and changing creative two to four times a month.
  • TikTok Smart+ App campaigns: launch with at least 4 to 6 creatives, per TikTok's guidance. If CPA doubles, or CTR or CVR declines over two days, TikTok suggests adding 2 to 5 fresh creatives without removing the current set.
  • Google App campaigns: up to 20 videos per ad group across landscape, portrait, and square, hosted on YouTube. Google's App campaign guidance recommends filling every asset slot and mixing lengths between 10 and 30 seconds.

Multiply the concepts a team wants to test by the hooks per concept and the formats each platform needs. Four concepts with three hooks each, delivered in three aspect ratios, is already 36 files before any language versions. That count is the production requirement for one round, before any refresh.

Produce Components, Then Assemble

When each video is a separate project, output stops at what the editing team can finish. Assembling videos from shared components raises that ceiling. An app ad breaks into three parts:

  • Hook: the first seconds, built to stop the scroll with a problem, a result, or a moment from the app.
  • Demo: real screen capture of the app doing what the hook promised, with one proof point the team can substantiate, such as a rating or a feature.
  • Offer and call to action: the trial, discount, or reason to install now, ending on an end card.

Five hooks, four demos, and two endings make 40 distinct videos from 11 components. When a hook wins, the team writes more hooks in the same style and reuses the demo and ending that already passed review.

Components need a few shared rules to assemble cleanly. Keep product screens accurate and current, use one audio bed and one type style per concept, and frame every shot with room for both vertical and horizontal crops.

Match Each Master to Its Placements

Platform specs decide what a finished file must look like, and they differ:

  • Meta: 9:16 for Stories and Reels, 1:1 or 4:5 for Feed, and 16:9 for in-stream. Meta fills missing ratios through cropping, padding, and AI expansion, and its ratio guidance recommends supplying 9:16 when Stories matter.
  • TikTok: vertical 9:16 is the recommended format for in-feed ads, with horizontal and square also accepted, according to TikTok's in-feed ad specs.
  • Google App campaigns: landscape 16:9, portrait 9:16, and square 1:1. Google's asset spec table lists 10 to 60 seconds, while its best practices page suggests 10 to 30.
  • App Store: up to three app previews per device size and language, 15 to 30 seconds each, showing only content captured within the app, per Apple's app preview specifications.
  • Connected TV: horizontal 16:9. On Roku Ads Manager, for example, videos must be 16:9 and run between 6 and 92 seconds.

Vertical masters serve TikTok, Reels, and Stories. Teams adding connected TV need a separate horizontal 16:9 master, which can reuse the same components reframed for the larger screen.

The ad and the store page should also match. Apple allows up to 70 custom product pages per app, each with its own screenshots, app previews, and promotional text, and Apple Ads can send search ad variations to them. A video ad built around one feature can then land on a page that opens with the same feature. App previews also feed Apple Ads directly: default search results ads use the screenshots and previews from the default product page.

Run a Weekly Creative Cycle

A weekly cycle turns results into the next batch before winners fade:

  1. Read results at the creative level and tag each ad by hook, demo, offer, and format.
  2. Brief new variants from the elements that held up across several ads.
  3. Produce and assemble the new components against the channel masters.
  4. Check every file against platform specs, claims, and product accuracy.
  5. Add the batch to live campaigns and pause only creatives that meet the platform's fatigue indicators.

For step one, Starti's guide to creative testing covers how to set up comparisons that produce a usable finding.

Measure Each Creative

Creative decisions need creative-level data. A mobile measurement partner such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, or Singular ties installs and in-app events back to each ad.

On iOS, postbacks from Apple's AdAttributionKit and SKAdNetwork carry no creative identifier. Campaign information travels in a source identifier of two to four digits that each ad network defines, reduced to two digits at lower privacy tiers. The first postback arrives 24 to 48 hours after the first conversion window, days 0 to 2 after the user first opens the app, closes. Creative comparisons on iOS therefore depend on platform reporting and on how each network encodes campaigns in that identifier.

CTV installs are measured differently. AppsFlyer, Adjust, Singular, and Branch attribute app installs to CTV exposure by matching devices in the same household, typically by IP address. Singular's default lookback is 24 hours, and Adjust ranks CTV impressions lowest in its attribution waterfall by default. Check those settings before reading CTV results.

Build, Buy, or Use a Production Platform

Teams can combine three options:

  • In-house editors with AI tools: the most control, and the right choice when the team already has creative staff and steady spend.
  • Agencies and UGC marketplaces: strong for hero assets and creator-led formats, with per-video cost and turnaround that make weekly volume expensive.
  • AI production platforms: briefs, scenes, versions, and reviews in one project, so a winning hook can be extended without restarting production.

Starti AI Studio is built for the third option. In Video Agent, a brief becomes a launch-ready cut, and a single scene can be changed in about 60 seconds without touching the approved parts.

Approved videos can be reframed for four aspect ratios, localized into ten languages, and published to connected Meta, Google Ads, and TikTok ad accounts. Smart Insight compares each ad's creative attributes with its performance in Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, and custom network accounts. Teams that want the production handled for them can use Creative Studio, Starti's done-for-you service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many video ads does a mobile app need?

Singular's 2026 benchmark puts the median advertiser at 13 new creatives a week across formats, with the top quarter at 53 or more.

What formats do mobile app video ads need?

Meta, TikTok, and Google App campaigns accept vertical 9:16, square 1:1, and horizontal 16:9 versions, and Meta feeds also take 4:5. Google App campaigns accept up to 20 videos per ad group across those orientations, and App Store previews run 15 to 30 seconds.

How often should app video ads be refreshed?

Meta recommends changing Advantage+ app campaign creative two to four times a month. On TikTok, a doubled CPA or a two-day drop in CTR or CVR signals fatigue, and the guidance is to add 2 to 5 fresh creatives.

Can CTV ads drive app installs?

Yes. Mobile measurement partners such as AppsFlyer, Adjust, Singular, and Branch credit an install to a CTV ad when the TV and the phone share a household. Starti AI Dash connects CTV exposure to supported installs, registrations, purchases, and revenue through mobile measurement partners.
